  • design-build guatemala

In the winter of 2011, I traveled to Comalapa in the central mountain region of Guatemala to work on a design-build project for a non-profit group called Long Way Home. This group, consisting of ten long-term volunteers from the US and Canada, had established and built a school which was (and still is) being expanded. Along with ten other students, I worked on the design and construction of a dome that would serve as a prototype for future classrooms. The 14'-diameter dome was built using earthbags supported by a gravel-packed tire foundation. Our tasks included testing and mixing soil, building and installing formwork, and using a pole compass to maintain consistency in the corbeling of the earthbags. [academic, 2011]
