This project proposes a boutique hotel located on the Frying Pan River in downtown Basalt. While the focus is on the visitor experience, the project also attempts to engage with the local community. My design responds to the two contrasting directionalities present at the site: the dynamic flow of the river and road traffic, and the fixed, stable nature of the site. Individual cabins, oriented to oppose the direction of the river’s flow, are raised on piers to provide privacy, views, and a sense of enclosure within the tree canopy. The continuation of an existing pedestrian walk way leading past the hotel itself promotes interaction with the local residents. [academic, 2013]
